Off Grid Overlanding

So you’re a legit Overlander looking to get off the grid huh? Yeah, I don’t care, I was kidding.  The lines between Offroading, Overlanding, Rock Crawling, Camping, Car Camping and Road Tripping can be as blurry as you wish. As I see it, Overlanding is driving over land (preferably dirt/mud/rocks) and then camping in a ground tent, rooftop tent, hammock or in the car. A "true" overland trip historically has multiple nights camping in a new area each night along a route, being self reliant with gear along the way. That being said, if you go offroad for 4hrs and then go home after and want to call it overlanding you get a pass from me.  

Overlanding in general describes self-reliant travel to remote destinations where the adventure is the primary goal.  We’ve compiled some of our favorite gear to do just that.

Safety first! A first aid kit is highly recommended, and we love the Colorado Based, Fire Fighter owned, Outer Limit Supply kit.  If anyone knows what you need in an emergency situation, it’s the Outer Limit team.  Whether you’re overlanding, camping, or just watching your kids soccer game, a proper first aid kit in the rig is a no brainer.

Every travel adventure requires a camp solution, and the hard shell rooftop tents from James Baroud have been the leaders in the category for decades.  Check out our FAQ on RTT’s or any James Baroud product page to find out all the reasons we love it, but they are the best in the biz for a reason.  

When you don’t have access to ice you’re going to want some refrigeration, and Dometic has a number of powered solutions to keep you fed and refreshed along the way.  Nothing better than pulling out an ice cream sandwich out the back of your rig when it’s 110 in moab.  Of course you’re going to need a source to power it along with all your other electronics, and Goal Zero is our go to solution for lithium battery packs, solar panels and rechargeable lighting.  Let us know what you’re trying to power, and we can help recommend a solution.

Long trips require plenty of water and fuel and for those needs we recommend Rotopax. They are easily mounted with a range of easy access and lockable solutions, plus they are leak proof and durable.

You may or may not be getting into any rock crawling situations but Mud, Sand, Snow; Maxtrax recovery boards are our #1 gadget for getting you unstuck and on your way.  If you only have room for one piece of recovery gear, we think this is the one.
